mering textiles became increasingly common in the 1300s, but their development
in the 1200s has gone largely unnoticed. An early example is a Crucifixion painted
in Lower Saxony or Westphalia during the second quarter of the thirteenth cen-
tury.49 Green is laid over yellow orpiment fabrics; orpiment and red lead are applied
over grey fabrics (bone black mixed with lead white); purple draperies (ultramarine
and organic red mixture) are shot through with a range of contrasting pigments:
red lead, organic red, orpiment, red and brown earths (pl. 13).
The Trinity Apocalypse is particularly rich in cangianti. Passages of verdigris and
yellow ochre alternate and overlap creating a glowing pattern that would be repli-
