Figure 2: The big data process model (cf. Weyer et al. 2018, p. 74) This model mainly consists of three phases: data generation, data analysis and data use, e.g. for controlling whole sociotechnical systems. In the first phase, data is being generated through the interaction of users and machines, the former of which creates information (e.g. through physical activity) that is then transformed into data by the latter.
