Text der Seite - 177 -

The Presentation of the Habsburg Dynasty in Bosnia and Herzegovina 177 was created by Frangeš-Mihanović sev- eral years later for the vestibule of the building of the Post and Telegraph Of- fice in Sarajevo, “the precision of which was a contribution to his tradition, his reputation, as well as to Croatian art as a whole”.68 Academism also prevailed during the creation of the full statue of the Emperor which was supposed to be unveiled in 1914 at the ceremonious opening of the Provincial Museum in Sarajevo.69 The Austrian press reported during the aforementioned year that the sculptor Josef Wilk had created the Emperor’s character in its full figure and in Lasa marble at the request of the Minister of Joint Finances, Leon Ritter von Biliński.70 Allegedly, Franz Joseph himself chose the model according to which he was to be shown. Wearing the robe of the toison d’or, a scroll in his left hand and with his right hand raised in a speaking pose, this sculpture was documented photographically and cinemato- graphically71, thanks to which it can be seen how representative it was (Fig. 5). Due to the outburst of World War I, it was never set in the museum, although it would have been a unique display of the full figure of the Emperor in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The period of World War I 1914–1918 After Gavrilo Princip’s assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his spouse Sophie von Hohenberg in 1914 and the outbreak of World War I, monuments in Bosnia and Herzegovina gained a somewhat different and broader use. In the midst Figure 5: Josef Wilk, Statue of the Emperor Franz Joseph, sculpted for the ceremonial opening of the Provincial Museum in Sarajevo, 1914 (in: Österreichisch Illustrierte Zeitung 23, 26 July 1914, iss. 42, 1163).
