State and National Representation in the Case of Ljubljana’s Town Hall 191 and the ceiling was ornamented with neatly-made coats-of-arms of all the important Slovene towns. On the right side wall, there was a large map of Ljubljana and its envi- rons placed between both lesenes. A monumental main chandelier with twenty-four flames provided illumination. In addition, there was a sidelight fitted on every lesene in the chamber and on the gallery.9 The council chamber was renovated in an extremely short time, given that on 3 May 1898, it was ready to welcome council members again. In his inaugural speech, Hribar pointed out that the renovation of the council chamber was more than neces- sary, because “the city council of a city such as Ljubljana is indeed a very important corporation; it was only natural that the place where it met should bear witness to its importance at first sight”.10 In his speech he emphasised not only that many Slovene craftsmen had taken part in the renovation of the chamber, but even named them individually: joiner Karol Binder11, furniture manufacturer J.
