21 Strossmayer entered the scene of Slovenian political history at the time of the Revolution of 1848–
1849. In Vienna, he was then leading the discourse with Slovenian nationalists about the possibilities
of uniting the Croatian and Slovenian lands and Vojvodina within the Austrian Empire. He sup-
ported the national Slovenian program to create the so-called ‘United Slovenia’, even though, based
on historical arguments, he defended the idea that Slovenians should integrate into the Croatian
nation. Strossmayer was convinced that Croatian and Slovenian literature would turn into just one
literature in the future. However, by donating money he helped to establish the ‘Slovenska matica’
[Slovene society] and several Slovenian national libraries.
