Militärbauten als Repräsentanten der Gesamtmonarchie in der siebenbürgischen ‚Peripherie‘ This­ paper­ explores­ possible­ ‘representations’­ of­ Habsburg­ rule­ in­ the­ field­ of­ architecture­ at­ the­ time of Austro-Hungarian dualism by casting its focus on buildings constructed by the k. u. k. im- perial­ army.­ Significantly,­ the­ army­ was­ one­ of­ the­ few­ institutions­ to­ have­ survived­ the­ combined­ Empire­ and­ Monarchy­ after­ the­ Ausgleich. Here, the focus is on Transylvania, a historical region on the­ South-Eastern­ ‘periphery’­ of­ the­ largely­ autonomous­ Hungarian­ part­ of­ the­ dual­ monarchy. A closer look on the planning of the military buildings reveals that it did not necessarily originate in­ Vienna.­ Frequently,­ the­ municipalities­ affected­ took­ over­ the­ role­ of­ building­ contractor.­ Military­ and­ civilian­ authorities­ at­ different­ levels­ of­ the­ administration­ –­ as­ well­ as­ private­ architects­ –­ were­ also involved in such projects. The­ office­ building­ of­ the­ Army­ Corps­ Headquarters­ for­ Transylvania­ in­ Sibiu­ (Hungarian:­ Na- gyszeben,­ German:­ Hermannstadt)­ was­ completed­ in­ 1891/92.­ As­ one­ such­ constellation,­ it­ re- sulted­ in­ a­ complex­ design­ which­ incorporated­ (albeit­ in­ modified­ form)­ contemporary­ Viennese­ tenements­ and­ military­ architecture­ as­ well­ as­ significant­ motifs­ of­ the­ Hofburg.­ Allowing­ for­ dimensions of meaning inherent in contemporary concepts of style such as Albert Ilg’s ‘Viennese Baroque’­ and­ Rudolf­ von­ Eitelberger’s­ ‘Viennese­ Renaissance’,­ and­ by­ means­ of­ comparisons­ with­ other­ (military)­ buildings­ in­ Sibiu,­ an­ analysis­ of­ the­ construction­ suggests­ that­ the­ ‘representa- tion’­ of­ Habsburg­ rule­ certainly­ plays­ a­ role­ here,­ yet­ can­ be­ read­ both­ as­ an­ offer­ of­ integration­ on­ the­ part­ of­ the­ ‘centre’­ and­ as­ an­ expression­ of­ loyalty­ on­ the­ part­ of­ the­ ‘periphery’.­ The­ strategy­ chosen for architectural ‘representation’ takes into consideration both the supranational image of the­ military­ and­ the­ dynasty­ as­ well­ as­ visual­ experiences­ of­ contemporaries­ in­ regard­ to­ military­ architecture and the particular circumstances that shaped nationality policy and religious condi- tions in the region. Der österreichisch-ungarische Ausgleich von 1867 räumte den Ländern der ungari- schen Krone einen weitgehend autonomen Status innerhalb der Habsburgermonar- chie ein. Das Haus Habsburg, das die Kaiserkrone und die Krone des ungarischen Königreichs in Personalunion auf sich vereinte, und ein Teil des unter kaiserlichem Oberbefehl stehenden Militärs1 waren neben der außenpolitischen Vertretung und dem für außenpolitische und gemeinsame militärische Angelegenheiten zuständigen Reichsfinanzministerium als einzige überstaatliche, die gesamte Monarchie betref- fende Institutionen verblieben.
