Representation of the Habsburgs in Croatian Historical Lands 341
Another baroque church dedicated to St Theresa of Avila, administered by the
Piarist fathers, was built between 1765 and 1771 in Bjelovar, a town that became
a military community after the reorganisation of Croatian military borders.31 The
church was completed in 1771, which is indicated by the chronogram above the
main entrance mentioning that the building of the church was approved by Empress
Maria Theresa: “D: O: M: V: M: Ista eCCLesIa DIVae VIrgInI theresIae a re-
gIna MarIa the resIa posIta est”. By 1772, when this church was consecrated, it
had been equipped by paintings made in Vienna, but nothing is known about them
except that they were sent to Vienna for restoration in 1847, never to return.
Portraits and graphic prints played an important role in retaining the awareness of
the permanent presence of the Habsburg rulers in the mind of the population. For
that purpose, numerous portraits of Habsburg rulers were disseminated throughout
