Abstract
Kinetic ratesof energyproductionareextremelycontrolledby the competingprocesses
that occur in systems capable of energy transfer. Besides organic and inorganic com-
poundsalreadyknownaselectronicallyactives, supramolecularsystemscanbethought
to formenergy transfer complexes to efficiently convert, for instance, light into electric-
ity and themechanisms for that can be of anykind. Photophysical andphotochemical
processes can simultaneously occur in such systems to provide energy conversion, by
competingmechanisms or collaborative ones. Thus, to investigate the kinetic rates of
eachprocessandtounderstand thedynamicsof theelectronicexcitedstatespopulation
and depopulation in strategically structured materials, can offer important tools to
efficientlymake use of this not always so evident power of supramolecularmaterials.
In this chapter,wepresent thestate-of-the-artof theuseofphotophysicalprocessesand
photochemical changes,presentedbynewmaterials anddevices toprovideacontrolof
energy transfer processes and enable distinct applications, since energy conversion to
sensingand imaging techniques tomaterial characterization.
