methods.For carbides, theTi/Csystemhasbeenstudied [13β15],withadditional studies in the
Ta/C[14,16]andSi/C[14,17]mixtures.TheTi/Bsystemwasalsoinvestigated[18].Themajority
of ETEwork being focused on theNi/Al system [12, 19β21]. The Ti/Fe2O3 system is the only
thermite system investigatedbyETE [22]. In addition to the experimental studies, anumberof
theoreticalmodelshavebeendeveloped tobetterunderstand theETEprocess [23β26].Figure1
shows that ranges of reported activation energies for the above mentioned gasless systems,
includingboth intermetallics and thermitesobtainedbyETE. It canbe seen that the results are
reproducible, confirming the reliabilityof theETEapproach.Additionally, the techniqueallows
foramorecompleteunderstandingofsystemsthathavemultiplesteps that rapidlyoccur inthe
high-temperature regime,whichgives insight into thecombustionprocess [2].
4.Differential thermalanalysis/differential scanningcalorimetry
This techniquehasbeenextensivelyused inmanyfields, including:polymerscience,biochem-
istry, andmaterials science. Inorder toutilize thesemethods, a sample isheatedat a constant
rate until the maximum set temperature is reached. Throughout the experiment, the heat
release characteristics of the sample are measured against an inert reference standard.
