brated woman professor of Greek Literature Clo-
tilde Tambroni in the same cemetery, and the
monument of her colleague Laura Bassi in Pa-
lazzo Poggi’s loggia.
In the same cemetery, the earliest painted
funeral monuments call to mind the memorials
in the Archiginnasio. The tomb of the famous
physician Tarsizio Riviera can be compared with
the monument of Marcello Malpighi. The fig-
ural language is the same, as well as the use of
lay virtues and allegories still coming from Ripa’s
Iconography. While Malpighi’s memorial is host-
ed in a deep niche in perspective, Riviera’s pyra-
mid stands in the foreground against a lively gar-
den background. Both works are an homage to
the illusionistic tradition of Bolognese quadra-
tura painting.12
In 1828 the papal administration of the cem-
etery favoured the creation of a hall dedicated
to the illustrious men who had helped the de-
velopment of Bologna. Also on this occasion
they were not only university professors, even
if the institution was very well represented. The
