brated woman professor of Greek Literature Clo- tilde Tambroni in the same cemetery, and the monument of her colleague Laura Bassi in Pa- lazzo Poggi’s loggia. In the same cemetery, the earliest painted funeral monuments call to mind the memorials in the Archiginnasio. The tomb of the famous physician Tarsizio Riviera can be compared with the monument of Marcello Malpighi. The fig- ural language is the same, as well as the use of lay virtues and allegories still coming from Ripa’s Iconography. While Malpighi’s memorial is host- ed in a deep niche in perspective, Riviera’s pyra- mid stands in the foreground against a lively gar- den background. Both works are an homage to the illusionistic tradition of Bolognese quadra- tura painting.12 In 1828 the papal administration of the cem- etery favoured the creation of a hall dedicated to the illustrious men who had helped the de- velopment of Bologna. Also on this occasion they were not only university professors, even if the institution was very well represented.
