There are to be likewise 48 portraits of consider- able persons that have been of the College. I think Dr Smyth is very right in all this, so fine a Temple of the Muses should be adorn’d with all the arts of the ingenious as we as the Studious Nine, especial- ly in an age that honors the polite arts more than the severe science.16 Although the bust of Dr Middleton men- tioned by Mrs Montagu seems never to have been made, ten busts of other subjects were to be executed by Roubiliac. The earliest of Rou- biliac’s busts, representing Bacon and Newton, had already been given in 1751, two years before Mrs Montagu writes about Smith’s plans. Two further busts representing John Ray and Francis Willoughby were recorded as gifts from another donor in 1751 (Fig. 7 and 8).
