forms part of the Song of Songs where the Sponsa (Bride) and Sponsus (Bridegroom)
become allegorical representations of the Virgin and Christ in conversation.11 It
comes as no surprise that this image of distress becomes a characteristic iconog-
raphy in later English medieval art.12 Other manuscripts associated with this artist
and his assistants include a Bible written by William of Hales in 1254 for the Canon
