of a bishop in the drawings added to the Westminster Psalter (c. 1250), presents a
diminutive, thin-limbed Christ displayed on a cross which is reminiscent of the
image in the Antiquaries Lindesey Psalter. This suggests the idea of victory over
death represented by the flowering cross had gained currency by the middle of the
fourteenth century (fig. 18).31
In his studies of the crucifixion in England Paul Binski has demonstrated that
the potential for the exploitation of emotion brought to the fore by the viewing of
