The work of this last painter from the Mazarine manuscript can be expanded
with reference to a previously unknown fragment from a Digestum vetus manuscript
(beginning of Liber VI), now in Plzeň/Pilsen (pl. 5), which he provided with a min-
iature and initial, as well as tendril and drollery decoration.21 Typical for his orna-
mental motifs are the small gilded rectangles within letters, triple-dot decoration,
French manuscripts come from this illuminator or his close circle: Paris, Bibliothèque
nationale de France, lat. 8926 (Guillelmus de Mandagoto, Super electionibus), fol. 201r;
and Venice, Biblioteca Marciana, Lat. IV, 109 (2434) (Gregory IX, Decretales), see Sto-
nes, Gothic Manuscripts II/1 (cit. n. 2), pp. 179‒181, cat. nos. VII‒7‒8, figs. 344‒346.
Significant formal and stylistic differences, however, mean that this last question requires
further investigation.
