107 EncountErs in Books The source of the underdrawings is revealed by the miniature in Book I on fol. 5r (pl. 1b), where the draperies also show borders with c-shapes and volute-like forms, and where the ruler figure shows parallels in posture and gesture with the work of the southern painter (compare pl. 8a, 9a with pl. 8b–8d, 9b). This implies that the northern French master executed not only the colour initials and the miniature at the beginning of Book I on fol. 5r (pl. 1b, 8a, 9a), but also the underdrawings for the remaining 24 miniatures (pl. 6a–6d, 7a–d, 8b–d, 9b), before these were finally painted in a more summary manner and with less tonal modelling by illuminators pl. 7a–d: see pl. 6a, details for fols. 35r (a–b), 86r (c), 17v (d)
