non PSH used traditional heating devises (“bukhari”) along with wood, coal, sawdust or other fuels like cowdung, shells or cardboard. Themain data collected during the studywere the fuel consumption (collected onceper day, five times aweek) and the indoor andoutdoor temperature collected using thermometerswith data-loggers. The thermometerswere positionedbasedon the following criteria: • Thermometersmeasuring indoor temperature – Room:main family room(heated room) – High: 50 cmfrom the ceiling – Opposite to the heating system (at least 3m from theheating system) – Protected fromdirect sunrays – Not close to thewindowsor doors (at least 1.5m fromwindows anddoors) – Protected to any activity to not bedisturbedor damaged • Thermometersmeasuringoutdoor temperature – Onouter north face of houses – Not easily accessible (Height: at least 2m) – Protected fromsnowand rain (below roof overhang) Only the fuel consumption of the devises situated in themain family room was recorded. Fuelwas not provided to households as it can promote over- consumption, household were using their own fuels and a stock wasmade close to the heating devise thatwasmonitored. The remaining stock of fuel wasmonitoredeverydaybeforerefillingthestocktoinsure that thestockwas sufficient to support the household energyneeds. 10.2.2 DataAnalysis Once the datawere collected, the fuel consumption and temperature recordswere cleaned and treated. 10.2.3 FuelConsumptionandTemperatureDataTreatment The daily fuel consumption monitored in kilogrammes has been transformed in kWh and the consumption of all fuels was summed to get an average energy consumptionperweek. 176 Y.Franc¸ois andM.Gavald~ao
