CrosssectionstructureofHEPHAISTOS. fielduniformityduetothecrosscouplingofmultiplesources [Dat01]. Butthemostimportantoneisthat,asstatedin[MM83], theimplemen- tationofmultiple feedingsourcescreates theopportunityofadjusting thepowersoastoimproveboththeEMfieldandthetemperaturedis- tributions, by the superposition of microwaves from different feeding sources. For the old generation of HEPHAISTOS, each module has 12 mi- crowave generators as feeding sources, and the total power of 12 mi- crowavegenerators is10KW.Thelocationsofeachslottedwaveguide are shown in figure 2.13 (from 1 to 12). In the upgraded HEPHAIS- TOScavity3, thenumberofmicrowavegenerators is reducedto6per module, and their locations are shown by the red labels in 2.13. With the new power supplies, each source is able to provide maximum 2 KW microwave power. Therefore the total power of one module is increased from 10 KW to 12 KW. This upgrade not only increases effi- ciencyofeachgenerator, butalsoreducestheareaofunclosedpartsof thecavity, which lowers thequality factorQandfurtherenhances the efficiencyof thewholecavity. 30
