170 Sektion II: Herrscher, Staat, Nation was to create a monument as rep- resentative as possible. Since it had been supported by voluntarism, as a sign of “truthful love, affection and loyalty”20, the monument was a re- minder not only of the Emperor’s presence in the country, but also of the first permanent statement of loy- alty of the population of Bosnia and Herzegovina towards the Emperor and the Imperial House. Minister Kállay even congratulated Bosnia publicly for this “voluntary state- ment” which “loudly testifies that the Bosnian people are gratefully loyal to the most serene ruler and that they are aware of this historical moment”.21 He also emphasised that the Emperor’s visit meant “a confirmation of the Habsburg Dynasty’s sympathy towards Bosnia that lasted for several centuries, as well as a pledge for its further development”.22 It is interesting that the travel writer Heinrich Renner, who published his report in 1896, noticed how this monument is also reminiscent of two other events – the raid of Eugene of Savoy on Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1697 and the march of the Austro-Hungarian army under General Josip Baron Filipović across the river Sava in 1878.23 It is clear that the monument as such, set at the border crossing into Bosnia24, served the purpose of demarcating the ‘imperial’ territory, which would be officially annexed only two decades later. In the context of memorials which demonstrate the importance and the presence of the House of Habsburg in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and which were created dur- ing Kállay’s regime, it would be worth mentioning the so-called Monument to the Croatian Nobility, raised in Bihać in 1900. Despite the fact that its construction was initiated by Catholics and by the head of the district in Bihać25, in memory of the no- bility whose tombstones had been found in the Fethija Mosque in 189426, neither the Figure 1: Postcard showing the monument in Bosanski Brod by architect Herman Bollé, raised in memory of the first presence of His Apostolic Highness Emperor and King Franz Joseph I, 1887.
