176 Sektion II: Herrscher, Staat, Nation ments were raised to the Emperor in 1913.64 Even the German immigrants who had settled in the former colony Rudolfsthal (today Bosanski Aleksan- drovac) raised a bust to the deceased prince Rudolf on the Emperor’s name day in 1909.65 Since these monuments, i. e. monu- mental busts, have not been preserved to this day, it is hard to speak about their appearance or about their artistic style of representing the Habsburgs. Nonetheless, it can be supposed that they did not differ from the official, courtly taste in art where academism was dominant. Such was the case at least with the depiction of Emperor Franz Joseph in buildings of social and cultural significance in Bosnia and Herzegovina, about which more is known today based on preserved photographic reproductions. It was already mentioned that in the period before the annexation, one such bust of the Emperor was set at the Konak, the residence of the provincial governor, for the first time. After 1908, however, the Emperor’s image appears in sev- eral buildings of public character. Among the most significant displays was the relief bust that was made and donated by the Croatian sculptor Robert Frangeš-Mihanović for the City Hall in 1908, again on the occasion of the annexation and the 60th anniversary of the rule of Franz Joseph.66 Although he was famous as a sculptor of secession in the fine arts of Croatia, Frangeš-Mihanović academically, “sculpturally and faithfully” shaped the image of the Emperor whose profile was framed by a laurel wreath (Fig. 4). This relief (which was two meters high) was set at the so-called east ceremonial hall of the City Hall, next to the platforms for city mayors, and was a sen- sation both for the domestic and for the Viennese press.67 An almost identical relief Figure 4: Robert Frangeš-Mihanović, Bust relief of the Emperor Franz Joseph in the City Hall of Sarajevo, unveiled in December 1908 (in: Österreichische Illustrierte Zeitung 18, 13 December 1908, iss. 11, 263).
