religious settings – the visual media had a decisive influence both as a means of claim-
ing these spaces by the Habsburg house and as a powerful tool to stimulate a sense
of political affiliation in the citizens of their hereditary lands. As for the representa-
tion of the Habsburg monarchs, particularly in public spaces, the unique Croatian
examples preserved until the present time include the high-relief portrait busts of
emperors Leopold I and Charles VI (III) on the pediment of the city’s Sea Gate (City
Gate) below the belfry in Rijeka (Italian: Fiume) (Fig. 1).
Combined into a whole in 1753, the two busts, the centrally positioned Habsburg
coat of arms with a Latin inscription carved into a cartouche below it in 1695
(“MAGNO LEOPOLDO I CAESARI / SVO CLEMENTIAE FLVMINI IN-
EXHAUSTO / IOSEPHO I ROMANORVM HVNGARIAE REGI / PATRIS
