Peter Konečný Der Herrscher im Bergwerk Visitationsreisen der Habsburger-Lothringer in die ungarischen (slowakischen) Bergreviere am Beispiel einer Reise von 1764* Haec Habspurgiacum circumdant lumina coelum, influxu quorum nostra fodina nitet.1 During the early modern period the traditional income sources of the monarch and thus of the state­ did­ not­ often­ suffice­ to­ finance­ the­ more­ and­ more­ costly­ military­ expenses.­ The­ ruling­ dynasty therefore focused its attention on the new needs of the state and to substantiation of its power using sophisticated cameralist policies. Thanks to its remarkable productivity the mining in the Kingdom of Hungary became an object of increased interest at the end of the 16th century. Since­ it­ was­ exempt­ of­ the­ scope­ of­ Hungarian­ estates­ and­ administered­ by­ the­ Viennese­ court­ finance­ administration­ the­ cameralist­ policies­ could­ be­ implemented­ in­ extensive­ way. This­ high­ economic­ relevance­ –­ especially­ of­ the­ mining­ districts­ in­ Lower­ Hungary­ (now­ Central­ Slovakia)­ –­ motivated­ the­ members­ of­ the­ dynasty­ to­ demonstrate­ regularly­ through­ personal­ high­ profile­ not­ only­ their­ own­ interest­ in­ mining­ and­ mineralogy,­ but­ also­ an­ absolute­ control­ over­ the­ lucrative­ mining­ industries.­ This­ can­ be­ studied­ in­ a­ downright­ exemplary­ way­ using­ the­ visitation of the two oldest sons of Maria Theresa and Francis of Lorraine, Joseph and Leopold, after the problematic Hungarian Diet of Pressburg in 1764. This visit served not only the aim to educate­ the­ future­ monarchs­ in­ a­ practical­ field­ of­ study,­ but­ also­ to­ demonstrate­ dominance­ over­ the state mining industries in Hungary and to stage the Habsburg-Lorraine dynasty as warrantors of their stability and prosperity. Die bisher relativ wenig untersuchte Praxis der Visitationsreisen der Herrscher in montanistische Gebiete2 Europas kontrastiert mit dem Forschungstand über die klas- sischen Hofreisen wie Krönungs- und Huldigungsreisen der Frühen Neuzeit. Dabei bieten gerade diese, auch wenn eher rar vorkommenden Ereignisse ein interessantes Untersuchungsfeld für die Analyse der Repräsentation der Herrscher im nichthö- fischen Kontext, aber auch für die Gegenüberstellung mit den Repräsentationsbe- strebungen anderer Akteure wie der Bergstädte, der ärarischen Bergverwaltung, der lokalen Stände oder kirchlicher Institutionen. Um diese Prozesse analytisch erfassen zu können, soll im Folgenden eine Reise – jene der ältesten Söhne und des künftigen Schwiegersohns von Maria Theresia und Franz I. Stephan – näher betrachtet wer-
