9 Foreword Tiet zes continued to publish important studies on a range of subjects ; nonetheless, they were obliged to sell their double portrait by Kokoschka, painted in 1909 (now in the Museum of Modern Art, New York). Finally, for the spring semester of 1954 Hans was invited by Columbia University to teach a course on Venetian painting of the Renaissance. Midway through, his can- cer made it impossible for him to continue lecturing ; he died on 4 April 1954. The course, however, continued, with Erica stepping in where Hans had left off : a final collaborative effort of this couple who had worked together so intimately throughout their married years. Columbia invited her back to lecture in 1955 and 1956. I was beginning my undergraduate studies then, without any particular focus, and so in retrospect I can only regret a missed opportunity.
