Tagebuch 1938/1
Ognissanti-Kirche, 13.–17.
HT und ETC gemeinsam verfasste Aufsatz „A Michelangelesque Puzzle (Relief with
„In vain the experience of every day warns us that every artist shares the
conditions of his formation with his whole generation and reaches his individual expres-
sion only at a certain degree of maturity. Nevertheless we again and again feel tempted
to heap all the production of a whole group of artists on its leading personality. […] This
failure to reach a decision is a serious deficiency if the chief aim of connoisseurship is
to be sought in its capacity to settle the exact place of every work and, thereby, its value
on the art market. Scientific criticism, however, may value as highly as the discovery of a
hitherto unknown work by a great artist the painting out of all the elements of his for-
mation as seen in a product from his immediate environment.“ (Tietze/Tietze-Conrat
1942, 239.)
could possibly have in U.S.A. I am ready to do any kind of teaching, provided I can spare
a certain amount of time for the research work which I am doing in collaboration with
my wife. We should anyhow, prefer living with the utmost economy on my earning rather
than have her accept a position in some other town or at least in a place very distant from
my own residence. On the whole she […] is not very fond of teaching and lecturing, but
she is an outstanding specialist on the field of old masters‘ drawings and early engravings
and, to tell the truth, I doubt that there is any person living, combining such a thorough
knowledge both of German and Italian graphic art (and even of French, on which she pu-
blished a book) as she has.“ (Emergency Committee in Aid of Displaced Foreign Scholars
records, Manuscripts and Archives Division, The New York Public Library, Hans Tietze,
HT an Fiske Kimball, 13.3.1938.)
In der Folge seiner Ernennung zum „Morse Professor of the Literature of the Arts of
Design“ im Jahr 1922 hatte der Architekt Fiske Kimball den Grundstein zur Einrichtung
eines eigenen Studienlehrgangs für Kunstgeschichte („Fine Arts Graduate Center“) am
traditionsreichen Institute of Fine Arts in New York gelegt. 1925 war Kimball auf den
Direktorenposten des Pennsylvania Museum of Art (später Philadelphia Museum of Art)
gewechselt.
stitute of Fine Arts, und dessen damaligen Leiter Walter W. S. Cook (siehe TB 1938/1,
