Bohlman sat together in Champaign, Illinois/USA, to share thoughts aboutGuidoAdler’s influences on the twentieth-centurydevelopmentofmusic scholarship inNorthAmerica.To- gether, BrunoNettl (bn.1930) andPhilipBohlman (bn.1952)might be said to represent two generations in a musicological genealogy that begins with the immigrationofmusicologists fromCentralEuropeduring theperiodof fascism andNazism inCentral Europe, which led toWorldWar II and theHolocaust. BrunoNettl isthesonofPaulNettl1(1889–1972),thePraguemusichistorianand later musicology professor at Indiana University, whowas also one of Guido Adler’s most trusted colleagues during the 1920s and 1930s. Bruno Nettl ac- companied his father when the family fled from Prague in 1939, eventually studyingethnomusicologyandearninghisdoctorateatIndianaUniversityandin the 1960smoving to theUniversity of Illinois, where he established one of the most distinguished programs in ethnomusicologyworldwide. Themusicology divisionat theUniversityof Illinoiswas itselfpartof theAdlergenealogy, for its 1 PaulNettlwasoneoftheleadingCzech-bornmusicologistsofthetwentiethcentury.Educated at theCharlesUniversityofPrague and theUniversityofVienna,Nettl held academicposi- tions inPraguebefore escaping theNaziswithhis family in 1939 and fleeing to theUnited States, initially teachingatWestminsterChoirCollegeandthenat IndianaUniversity.
