Even in theAmerican Institute ofMusicology, the idea is that an edition is something that youcreate forperformers. BN: Adler was not all that much at the vanguard. The collegiummusicum things done byHugoRiemann70 (1849–1919), those all go back.Maybe thereareeditions forperformers that aredistinct fromcritical editions. PVB: Theborderbetween the two iswhenyoustart topublishparts. BN: Ifthey’reputtogetherwithoutexaminingasmanysourcesasyoucan, but really just fromonesource, thenit’snotcritical, eventhoughitmaywork forperformance. AdlerReception intheUnitedStates BN: Youwere talkingaboutAdler reception.Myguess is that coursesonthe historyofmusicologydogettaught intheUnitedStates, andcoursesthat are introductions tomusicologydo include someof the history. I don’t knowwhether this is true of other disciplines somuch, or whether it’s true, say, in Europe. Do they teach courses about the history ofmusi- cology inVienna? And if so,does everyone take them? PVB: I don’t know the answer to that question. I should. Vienna is very in- terested in its own history and its central role in der vergleichend-sys- tematischenMusikwissenschaft.Whether there are real courses on the history of ethnomusicology or the history of systematicmusicology, I don’t know. I didwonder – not to pull you away from that question – about theway that influenceor receptiondoes spread fromViennaand picksuppartsof theoldempire, theoldmonarchy. I thinkof theSlovak ethnomusicologist, Osk#r Elschek71 (bn. 1931), who is very much an ethnomusicologistworking in theVienneseworld. BN: Idon’tknow, forexample, whetherHungarianscholarshipisveryclosely associatedwiththat.TheHungarianshadtheirownmodels, oneofwhich isverymuchB8laBartjk72(1881–1945).Theyweren’t,ofcourse,all folk- song collectors, but even Bartjk and other people were verymuch in- directorofoperahouses throughout theworld.Hehasbeenmusicdirectorof theChicago SymphonyOrchestra since2010. 70 HugoRiemannwasaGermanmusicscholar, bestknownforhissystemofmusictheoryand analysis, which bears his name. His reference work, RiemannMusiklexikon, has set the standard formusicdictionaries foroveracentury. 71 Osk#r Elschek is a Slovak ethnomusicologist and systematicmusicologist whose research rangeswidelyacrossfolk-musicstudies,systematicmusicology,andorganology.Heremains activeas aprofessorof ethnomusicology inBratislavaandat theUniversityofVienna. 72 B8la Bartjk was one of the most significant composers and ethnomusicologists of the twentieth century. He spentmost of his career in Budapest, but his folk-music research, especially, stretchedacrossEasternEurope.Hedied inNewYorkCityafter immigratingat theoutbreakofWorldWar II.
