Chapter 4 A Hybrid Energy Storage System for a Coaxial Power- Split Hybrid Powertrain Enhua Wang, Fuyuan Yang and Minggao Ouyang Additional information is available at the end of the chapter http://dx.doi.org/10.5772/67756 Abstract Ahybrid energy storage system (HESS) consistingof batteries and supercapacitors can beusedtoreducebatterystressandrecoverbrakingenergyefficiently. In thispaper, the performanceof anovel coaxial power-split hybrid transit buswithanHESS is studied. The coaxial power-split hybrid powertrain consists of a diesel engine, a generator, a clutch, and amotor, whose axles are arranged in a line. Amathematicalmodel of the coaxial power-split hybridpowertrainwith anHESS is established and theparameters are configured using experimental data. Subsequently, to estimate the system perfor- mance, a program is designed based on Matlab and Advisor. A rule-based control strategy is designed and finely tuned for the coaxial power-split hybrid powertrain. Then, using theChineseTransit BusCityDrivingCycle (CTBCDC), the systemcharac- teristics and energy efficiencies of the designed coaxial power-split hybrid powertrain with anHESS are analysed. The results indicate that the proposed coaxial power-split hybridpowertrainwithanHESScanfulfil thedrivabilityrequirementof transitbusand enhance the energy efficiency significantly comparedwith a conventional powertrain bus as well as reduce the battery stress simultaneously. Using an HESS is a good solution for thecoaxialpower-splithybrid transitbus.
