confessionswouldbeequally treated.AsignofK#llay’swill todemonstrate the
roleplayedinthisnewfieldofresearchbybothprovinceswastheorganizationin
1894 of the congress of archeology and anthropology in Sarajevo:53 it was the
occasiontoaffirmbosˇnjasˇtvo transnational identity.Yet therewasnotaproper
buildingforthemuseumwhichcollectionswereaccumulatingandbadlyhoused
in thePension fundbuilding. Since themuseumwas also supposed to fulfill a
pedagogicaldutybywelcomingtheschoolchildren, theneedforavastbuilding
wasobviousandthiswouldalsoservethediscourseoverdevelopmentofBosnia
andHerzegovina.ThecommissionwasgiventoKarelParˇ&kattheoccasionofthe
new urban planning in 1906. The building was finished in 1909: it shows an
undeniable historicist style similar tomanyothermuseumsbuilt elsewhere in
theempirewhichParˇ&khadextensivelystudiedduringafieldtripthattookhim
alsoabroad.54Abotanicalgardenwascreatedintheatriumofthemuseumthatis
divided into four pavilions (Prehistory, Antiquity, Ethnography, and Natural
History). IntheendtheMuslimpresenceinthemuseumwaslimitedtovery few
elements.Thesamecanbesaidaboutthemuseum’sjournal,Glasnikzemaljskog
muzeja, edited by Truhelka that was sent to all the schools of the territory.55
FrancisJosephhadonlyoneoccasiontovisitBosniaandHerzegovinaandhe
did it for the inaugurationof theDiet inMay1910.He travelled tobothcapital
citiesofSarajevoandMostar.HearrivedinSarajevoonMay30thandstayeduntil
June3rdwhenhedeparted forMostar.Theannouncementof thevisit causedan
incredible agitation in town: Mayor Essad Kulovic´ asked the inhabitants to
decoratetheirhousesanddeckthemwithflags.TheSarajevoerTagblattdevoted
aspecialissueentitledKaisernummeron31Maytoreportonthefirststepsofthe
visit.Theemperorwaswelcomedbythemayortowhomheansweredinhisusual
polite andneutral toneexpressinghis satisfaction:
“WithjoyfulheartdoIcomeheretovisit for thefirst timeMyprovincialcapitalandto
spendafewdaysamongtheinhabitantsofthisdynamiccityaswellaswiththecitizens
ofthisbeautifulcountry.Decadesofcivilizationwork(Kulturarbeit)havecreatedsolid
linksbetweenthemost recent inhabitantsof theAustro-Hungarianmonarchyand its
other parts; the feelings that are expressed toMeare avaluable sign that the loyalty
towards therulinghousehasdeeproots.”
