The city turned into a contestedspacewherepeoplewhofeltexcludedpretendedtobevisiblewhilethe leadinggroupbuiltanarrativeofbesiegedfortress.Infrontof thatthediscourse conveyedby the statewas thatbothmodelswerepossible: dynasticpatriotism was not incompatible with national affirmation; indeed this is what city pa- triotismwas about. Identification with both levels was the rule and not the exception for regardlessof thegrouptheybelonged too,peopleprofessed their loyalty to themonarchy.
