Conclusion
Inmanycities inhabitantswerenomorewilling to share theurban spacewith
fellow citizens they considered ‘others’ in termsof language, culture, and reli-
gion. Sometimes even the dynastic events causedproblemsbecause theywere
interpretedbylocalprotagonistsinanationalwaythusalienatingonepartofthe
populace. Provinces were being redefined following national lines such as in
Moravia andBucovina: this had consequences in the citieswhere people now
tendedtoseparate.Mostcelebrationsthatwerestill transnationalwerereligious
ceremonies to some extent, and dynastic festivities. The city turned into a

conveyedby the statewas thatbothmodelswerepossible: dynasticpatriotism
was not incompatible with national affirmation; indeed this is what city pa-
triotismwas about. Identification with both levels was the rule and not the
exception for regardlessof thegrouptheybelonged too, peopleprofessed their
loyalty to themonarchy. The spontaneous demonstrations erupting inmany
townsat thenewsof theSarajevoassassinationwereaproofof this attachment
