proach–theoppositeperspective–wouldbemoresuitableforacomprehensive
analysisoftheempireasawhole.It istrue,thatfromsuchaperspectiveAustria-
Hungarylooksmorestructuredthananempireisusuallyassumedtobe.It isnot
just a single (or two)metropolitan centerswith their peripheries, but rather a
morerefined,andmoreunevensystemofrelationsbetweencentersandregions
and between these regions, too. Looking at how certain regions and localities
were related to the centers and to other regions could offer a chance to re-
construct theempire frombelowandtoovercomethedualitysooftenreflected
in the literature: the co-existence of a complex, imperial Cisleithania and a
unitaryHungariannationstate.
