Abstract. Indoor location is a topic that has attracted lot attention in the past two
decades. This ismainlydue to the successof outdoor location, typicallyGPS, and
the provided services based on this technology. The goal of indoor location is to
provide similar services that can be found in outdoor locationwhereGPS signal
can not penetrate (buildings such as airports, malls, museums and homes). This
tutorial presents the different technologies available for indoor location, the algo-
rithmsused, example applications and future research lines. Special attentionwill
bedevoted to locationsystemsbasedonWi-Fiļ¬ngerprinting.

1. Introduction
Thegoal of indoor location is to estimate a userās position inside a building, where the
intensity of the GPS signal is too low to be detected. Indoor location is an enabling
technology for providing services relaying in the userās location information. Some of
these services are a replica ofGPS-based services, like route planning, whereas others
are speciļ¬cnew, likeassistive technologies in the realmofAmbientAssistedLivingand
SmartEnvironments [1,2].
2. Indoorenabling technologies
Several technologies have been applied to address the indoor location challenge:Blue-
toothLowEnergy(BLE),sound/ultrasound,Wi-Fiļ¬ngerprinting,video,PassiveInfrared
sensors (PIR),UltraWideBand (UWB)andNFC,among themost extendedused [3,4].
Wi-Fiļ¬ngerprinting isoneof themostusedmethods for indoor location. This ismainly
due to theubiquitouspresenceofWi-Fi signals inurbanareas, its availability taken into
account thatmostmobilephonesareequippedwithWi-Fihardware,andto itsaffordable
price.
