Problems,ChallengesandPossibilities A smart building is a complex system to build and implement since it contain several smart sub-systems (e.g., smart homes, energy savingmanagement), electronics compo- nents (e.g., sensors, actuators, controllers) and concepts (e.g., security, energy saving, go green). It also need to take account of its habitants (e.g., needs, preferences) to pro- vide adapted services. The interaction of the inner smart building system between the different entities (e.g., sensors to controller, HMI to device) will allow an easy access to services and smart appliances, and a selfmanagement of this latter in an intelligent, automatic and transparentwaywithout user’s intervention. Then, appropriate and inno- vative technology and tools are required in order to provide better solutions for these systems. Also, adapteddesignmethodologiesand toolsneed tobeused tosupportall the desired requirements (e.g., user needs, smart appliances, interaction). Semantics is also an important aspect to take intoconsiderationwhile implementingsuchsystems. Software engineering offersmany software development processes such asModel-Driven Engineering (MDE) andmethodologies for designing and developing systems such asDomain-Specific Languages andmodel transformations thatmightbea suitable solution fordeveloping thesekindof systems. 1.3. ContributionandContents In this paper, wepropose a systemarchitecture for smart building.Wedefineamethod- ology for smart buildingmodeling. It allowsboth structural andbehavioral definitionof a smartbuildingsystemaswell asavalidationandverificationphasebymodel transfor- mations. The rest of the paper is structured as follows: Section2presents our proposed smartbuildingsystemarchitecture.Section3summarizes relatedwork insmartbuilding development domain, while in Section 4,we define ourmethodology. In Section 5,we performacase study todemonstrateourproposal andSection6concludesourpaper. 2. SmartBuildingSystemArchitecture 2.1. IntroductionandOutlooks Wedefineourproposed smart buildingas anentity equippedwith computer technology andcomposedof smarthomes, smartmanagement system, smart security system, smart appliances(e.g.,elevator, light)andseveralkindofsensors(e.g.,presence, light, smoke). In addition, we also consider the garage and the rooftopwhich are important parts to exploit in abuilding.Thefirst one canbe increasedbyautomatedparking systemsaug- mentedwithmechanismstomovecars to their respectivespots foruserscomfortandcan also be an energy source for electric vehicles for renewable energy purposes, while the secondoneisan importantspace tomine incities thatarebecomingmoreandmorepop- A.LyazidiandS.Mouline /BuiS:AMethodology forSmartBuildingModeling 57
