The building is located in the campus of UIB outside of Palma downtown and serves as
pilot case to assess the environmental performance of the building in relation to the
Mediterranean climate. Figure 1 shows the modular building designed as a single room
of approx. 6 m2 with an entrance door and without windows. The total indoor space
volume is 15 m3.
2.2. Cold painting solution
The cold painting material selected in this analysis is an outdoor paint with a high
performance as a thermal isolation and minimizing solar radiation impact. The paint is
designed for application over metallic or prefabricated roofs producing an indoor
temperature reduction maintaining the external roof at ambient temperature. Two layers
of Quimfor Coating no7 WB where applied using a roller-based method. The Table 1
summarizes the main features of the solar paint applied reported by provider following
the measurement method described in ASTM E1980:2001.
2.3. Energy savings analysis
The building is equipped with an air conditioner system with solar energy capabilities to
become an isolated installation from the main electric power. The air conditioner system
provides an easy way to monitor the building power consumption requirements. The
temperature and the electric power consumption have been monitored to observe the
energy savings on the climate conditioner system during summer conditions in
Mediterranean clime. The difference temperature reported during a period of time impact
directly on the air-conditioner system because this temperature increment is dissipated
part to the ambient and part to the internal room pushing the power consumption of cooler
system. A very representative demonstration of this temperature difference is the
thermography showed in figure 2. The cooler surface is oriented to South and is painted.
The hotter surface is oriented to West without solar paint. The temperature maximum
difference observed was about 9oC between surfaces.
The differences observed between the surface temperatures are translated to power
savings. Therefore, the total consumption is reduced as the working state of air
conditioning is retarded, when the eco-materials and solar paint are used. This delay is
translated directly amount savings because the energy consumption is reduced. The
parameters summarized in Table 2 shows the benefits of the building approach.
