Physicochemical Characterization Towards Smart Water Management Karima LAAROUSSI a,1 , Said HILALI b and Yahya KOULALI b a Greenwish Sustainable Design and Consulting Ltd, London, UK b Hassan 1 st University, Settat, Morocco Abstract. Water is an essential material for the operation of factories. It is threatened by difficult circumstances and causes the disruption of different ecosystems especially in aquatic environments. The main problems characterizing water situation in Morocco today are linked to shortage’s aggravation through over- exploitation, and on the other hand to the degradation of the quality of water resources such as a lack of wastewater treatment. However, the depollution of these discharges requires several steps starting with the identification of different pollutants until their treatments. As a result, we carried out this first physicochemical characterization of the effluents of 5 industrial units along with the final collector at the exit of the industrial zone of Settat, and we discussed pollution load generated by each type of industry. The results show that these discharges were heavily loaded with organic matter and with high conductivity, compared with tolerances based on national and international standards for activities-related releases. Our approach aims to set up new methods on smart water management in Morocco based on techniques like regular monitoring and automatic sampling. Keywords. Introduction Water is a precious good that undergoes various types of pollution and degradations from countless origins: industrial, domestic or agricultural. With the industrial revolution of the nineteenth century, the valorization of water vapor allowed not only the response to the needs of industry but also the development of its production capacity. Water has become an essential material for the operation of factories. Water is confronted with difficult situations and causes the disruption of different ecosystems especially aquatic environments [1], [2] and [3]. The main problems characterizing the water situation in Morocco today are linked to the shortage’s aggravation through over-exploitation, and on the other hand to the degradation of the quality of water resources such as an absence of wastewater treatment [4]. These three cases are present in the industrial zone of the city of Settat, and where: Almost all industrial units discharge their effluents in their raw state, existing pre-treatment works are not functioning in a regular way, industrial units do not have a system for regular monitoring of their pollution. Collectors in the liquid wastewater system in the industrial zone are attacked by chemical materials from industrial effluents. Industrial spills without pre-treatment will 1 Corresponding Author: Greenwish Sustainable Design and Consulting Ltd, 4 Benjamin Adams House, 7 King’s Scholars Passage, London, SW1P 1FZ, UK, E-mail: laaroussikarima@gmail.com Intelligent Environments 2019 A.
