As the world moves steadily to become a knowledge-based economy, education and
learning have never been more important. Technology is playing an increasingly crucial
role in the delivery of education which, in turn, is driving research to discover ever better
technological solutions. The age of intelligent environments is bringing such pedagogical
advances as smart classrooms, intelligent campuses, personalized intelligent tutors,
educational-analytics (big data), mobile learning, and immersive learning through X-
Reality, including virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and mixed reality (MR)
All these educational technology advances have the potential to revolutionize current
educational practices and to challenge the traditional notion of a university or a school.
However, the successful deployment of technology in education is not just a matter for
science and engineering rather it touches in wider issues such as the cultural dimension
which is becoming an increasing important factor in online systems as globalization of
education continues its, seemingly, unstoppable march. Likewise, matters relating to
commercializing future educational environments have an important role to play in the
successful deployment of these technologies. Thus, this is complex but interesting area
of research.
To explore this area we have organized a series of academic events starting with the
first workshop on Future Intelligent Educational Environments, held in
Guanajuato, Mexico) (2012) and Athens, Greece (2013). The 2014 edition in
Shanghai marked a significant step in the nature of the event, becoming a Symposium on
Future Intelligent Educational Environments (SOFIEE) which continued in Prague,
Czech Republic (2015); London, UK (2016); Seoul, Korea (2017) and Rome, Italy
(2018). We hope that this 2019 edition in Morocco will continue the successful
momentum, by serving as a forum for researchers and practitioners to discuss the latest
intelligent technologies that can support the development of teaching and learning
around the world.
Papers accepted into this year’s Symposium cover a topical set of issues including:
• Bridging the divide: the current status of Web 2.0 in higher education,
• Models for facilitating team-based mobile learning in large-size classes,
• Context in mobile learning: the point of view of the learners,
• Research on mobile blended learning in teaching English to college students,
• Developing “smart” tutorial tools to assist students with learning calculus,
