AmbientAssistedLiving foranAgeing Society ATechnologicalOverview DanielaMICUCCI a,1 aUniversityofMilano -Bicocca Abstract. The increase in life expectancyand thedecrease in thebirths rate, cause the phenomenon called population ageing. The oncoming shortage of caregivers and the strong desire of the older adults to live in their own homes originated an increasing interest inAmbientAssistedLiving (AAL).AALencompasses techni- cal systems to support people in their daily routines. The talk focuses on the tech- nological aspectsofAALsystemsdescribing thecapabilities they requireandhow theyarebeingaddressed. 1. Introduction In the coming decades, the number of elderly people is expected to grow signiïŹcantly. TheWorldPopulationAgeingReport estimates that the global population of older per- sons will reach nearly 2.1 billion by 2050 [8]. Ageing results from the demographic transition, a processwhere reductions inmortality are followed by reductions in fertil- ity [2,6]. The increasing trend of life expectancy has been directly proportional to the increase in disability [4]. Thus, oldest people represent the greatest challenge in pro- viding health-related services and identifyingways to assist them inmaintaining inde- pendence [5].Thisoriginatedan increasing interest inAmbientAssistedLiving (AAL), which encompasses technological solutions that from one side automatically assist el- derlypeople inperformingdailyactivitiesand,ontheotherside,promptlydetectanoma- loussituationsrelatedtodiseasesor tosituationspurelyrelatedtotheoldage, suchas the worseningof themild cognitive impairment [1], the prompt identiïŹcationof conditions favorable toheart failures [3], and thepromptdetectionof falls [7].The talk focuseson the technological aspects of AAL systems describing the capabilities they require and howtheyarebeingaddressedbycurrent solutions.
