Filmmakers were attracted by the historicity of the biblical narrative, but
their films can be better understood as engendering myth-making processes
(mythopoiesis), with research and discussions amongst historians missing or
neglected. Scholars and filmmakers share an interest in evoking the humanity
of Jesus, following the paths of two European traditions, one rooted in tex-
tual and philological practices and the other in the performative character of
Christianity, expressed through art and sacred theatre. These two traditions do
intersect, but they often misunderstand each other. The film industry is still to
embrace some of the most relevant achievements of scholars.49
