night. “The Dark Night of the Soul” is a poem by the mystic John of the
Cross to which the lyrics of RosalĂa’s song refer. The Carmelite friar lived in
Spain in the 16th century and was a representative of the Counter Reforma-
tion. Locked up in a tiny cell almost without light, he wrote the poem that
