Agnethe Siquans Essen, vor allem Brot und Fleisch, spielt in den Levitikushomilien des Ori- genes eine wichtige Rolle. Entsprechend der kirchlichen Überzeugung, dass die Heilige Schrift das Wort Gottes enthält und daher in geistigem Sinn ver- standen werden muss, deutet er das Essen in spirituellem Sinn und bezieht es unter anderem mit Hilfe des Johannesevangeliums und der Paulusbrie- fe auf das Hören und Verstehen des Wortes Gottes. Er ermahnt seine Zu- hörerinnen und Zuhörer besonders mit Bildern von Essen und Speise, sich intensiv mit dem Wort Gottes zu beschäftigen, Predigten und Lehre anzu- hören und so zu einem geistigen Verständnis zu gelangen, um auf ihrem spirituellen Weg voranzuschreiten. „Die Speise des Wortes Gottes essen“ LIMINA Grazer theologische Perspektiven | 4:2, 2021, 115–133 | www.limina-graz.eu | DOI: 10.25364/17.4:2021.2.6 ABSTRACT Spirituelle Deutung des Essens am Beispiel von Origenes’ Levitikushomilien “Eat the food of the word of God.” The spiritual meaning of eating on the exam- ple of Origen’s homilies on Leviticus Food, bread and flesh in particular, play a central theme in Origen’s homilies on Leviticus. Following on from his notion that the holy scripture contains the word of God and thus must be understood spiritually, he also views eating as a spir- itual act. Drawing on the Gospel of John and the epistles of Paul, he likens eating to hearing and understanding the word of God. He uses images of eating and food to encourage people to profoundly engage with the word of God, to closely listen to sermons and teachings, in order to achieve a deeper understanding and progress in their spiritual journey.
