So unternahm er noch während der Dreharbeiten mehrere Versuche, Wilsons Gesang mit Overdubs zu ersetzen. Es gibt ein Memo von Hai Wallis an Leo Forbstein, den Lei- ter der Musikabteilung von Warner Bros., vom 3. Juli mit der Anweisung, einen Ersatz für Wilson zu finden. „Dear Leo: Please begin looking immediately for a negro with a good crooning voice to double all of Dooley Wilsons songs in ,Casablanca'. I would like to have sound tracks made of two or three so that I can make a selection."221 Am 11. Juli schrieb Wallis' Assistentin nochmals ein Memo an Forbstein. „Mr. Wallis would like to know if you have set a double to do Dooley Wilsons songs for ,Casablanca' ... Mr Wallis wants to get this done ... "222 Trotz all dieser Versuche blieb es bei Dooley Wilson, sowohl als Schauspieler als auch als Sänger, und Hall Wallis gab später zu, dass Dooley Wilson seine Sache gut gemacht habe. „Finally it was determined Sam shouldn't be too professional, and we went with Dooley's own voice.
