Jahrhunderts Ursula feldkamp Abstract This article introduces two personal journals of voyagers who sailed from Bremen to Baltimore. The first journal belongs to caroline von Aschen, who started her travel 1801 in company of a merchant’s wife. The second journal was written by the emigrating siblings charlotte and Ludwig Schreiber in 1852. While the Schreibers left their hometown Quakenbrück to start a new life in America, caroline von Aschen was supposed to stay in Baltimore only for some time. The journals document the travelers’ irritations, fears and hopes regarding their future. caroline von Aschen and Ludwig Schreiber perceived the entering of the ship as a turning point in their lives. caroline’s break with her old life started with her father’s death, when her support and guardianship was laid into foreign hands, while Ludwig and charlotte were looking forward to their life in Baltimore, caroline spent her travel homesick and depressed.
