ISKCON Portugal was also called by the Lisbon City Hall to organize the European Hindu Forum in June, two weeks before the festival. The Hindu-European Forum, as advertised: “promotes values of friendship, peace and inter-religious values, aims to provide government support for citizens, build communities that are integrated and improve the integration of Hindu communities. To promote European human values of dignity using Hindu ethics which is rooted in respect for all traditions, cultures, religions and beliefs.” Both the signing of the protocol and the organization of the Hindu-European Forum point to the fact that the Ratha Yatra festival has opened a dialogue between the Hare Krishna Move- ment, the Lisbon City Hall and the Hindu communities. As a result, the festival functions socially and politically for all, legitimising the participants in the public space of the city, inclu- ding those who do not identify themselves in terms of religious practices. Conclusions The Hare Krishna Movement has sought to integrate itself into every day and festive practices of sociability in the city of Lisbon, organising activities that, despite being of a religious nature, are presented as cultural events.
