has also engagedpolicy-makers, politicians and civil society activistswith the
objectiveof shaping thebroaderpolitical debates about the futuredirectionof
society,andspecificallyhowtoensureanethical future.Astheeditorshighlight,
she believes that the achievement of justice is a permanent challenge and she
recognizestheneedfordialogueinthesearchforamorehumanesociety.Inthis
search for amorehumane society newchallenges constantly emerge, often re-
latedtotheupper limitsof technology.Todaymanyof theethicalchallengesare
associatedwiththeimplicationsoftheartificial intelligence(AI)revolution.Asa
result,itisimportantthattheethicalimplicationsofthistechnology,particularly
for the fieldof social ethics, be interrogated.
1. Societal ImpactsofDeepLearningandArtificial Intelligence
Themedia is replete with accounts of the unpredictable impacts of artificial
intelligence. We are familiar with Tay, the Twitterbot designed byMicrosoft
engineers who unleashed a stream of racist, sexist, homophobic and Hol-
ocaust-denying tweets as it ‘learned from’whatwas tweetedat it. Theongoing
political fallout from the abuse of Facebook’s News Feed algorithm and the
pervasiveness of fake news online during the 2016 U.S. presidential election
provides an evenmore stark example of how deep learning and artificial in-
telligencehasbeguntochallengemanyof theassumptionsandnormsonwhich
societies have heretofore depended. Indeed, the ubiquity and convergence of
technologies, togetherwiththespeedof theirdevelopmentmeans thatmanyof
usareunawareofthedepthoftheirimpactandoftheethicalchallengesthatthey
