PotsdamInstituteofClimateImpact,“thepoorareresponsibleforatinyshareof
global emissions, yet theyhave tobear the greatest consequences. Contrary to
what some have claimed, it is not themass of poor people that destroys the
planet, but theconsumptionof the rich.Globalwarming is theconsequenceof
this development of a few andwill affect everyone, but brings devastation es-
pecially to the weakest in society.”10Research on household consumption in
Finlandmappingavisionfor2050demandstocut theuseofmaterial resources
bya factorof five, fromcurrently 40 to8 tonsperpersonayear.11Theauthors
admitthatthereisan“enormoustransformationtask”anda“longwaytogo”in
viewof reducingprevailingpatternsofmaterial use.The total consumptionof
resources in Germany per person in 2004 was 74.000kg or 74metric tons.12
WEEE (Waste Electrical andElectronicEquipment, or e-waste) is globally the
fastestgrowingwastestream.Theyear2016saw44.7milliontons(Mt)ofe-waste
worldwide, with only 20 percent (8.9 Mt) of it being collected and recycled
properly, resulting in 80 percent (35.8Mt) of it being unaccounted for.13This
entails enormous environmental, social and political implications, as scarce
so-calledconflictmaterialsarecrucialfortheproductionespeciallyofelectronic
equipment.“Thetotalvalueofallrawmaterialspresentine-wasteisestimatedat
approximately 55 billion euros in 2016, which is more than the 2016 Gross
Domestic Product ofmost countries in the world.”14Robertson affirms that:
