grantedorexploited.[…]Whenwefastwelearnthattoomuchofthetimepersonallife
ismarkedbyanaggressiveorrapaciousdisposition(whichiswhywemightdevelopa
gentler egoandacalmergait).Whenwe fast,we learnthat inmanyofouractionswe
presumethattheworld’sgiftsexistforourownexclusiveenjoyment(hencetheneedto
tamethegreedanddevelop therestraint thatareat thebasisofall just relationships).
Fasting, in other words, leads us to a realization about the responsibilities of life
together.Whenwerefrain fromeating,wenotonlydemonstrate solidaritywiththose
whodonothave foodtoeatbutwealsodemonstrate that foodis thepreciousgiftofa
self-givingGod.[…]Fasting, initsmostfundamentalaspiration,isaboutdevelopinga
sacrificial, self-offering life thataddressesandnurtures theneedsofothers.”48
Wehave to be thankful to the youngpeople and their insistentwakeup call in
their Friday for Future Initiative. There aremany other valuablemovements,
ushering in fundamental changes in our societies, like the Zero-Waste-Move-
ments, or theSlow-Food-MovementofCarloPetrini, promotingclean,healthy,
andjustfood,preservinglocal families,cultures,natural landscapes,andsaving
fruitvarietyandtastesinits“ArcofTaste”.49Letusembarkontheirsaving“Arc”
andsupportpracticalapplicationsofamuchmoreresourcesensibleworld.Our
Fridayswill truly serve a sustainable future ifweheed the call of scientists for
mitigating climate change by our dietary choices,50 refraining frommeat and
foodwasteandlossascrucialstepstowardsaspiritualandculturalrevolutionin
