The provenanceof thenational character, on theotherhand, wasamatterof sec- ondaryimportanceforhim. However, thequestionremainsastowhyaparticular typeofnationalchar- acter arbitrates a strictly defined rangeof commonbehavioural patterns and bonds in thesphereofconsciousness.Furthermore, what traitof thenational character affords it priority over professional or class character?
