weremostly causedbywoodenpipeswhichhad tobedrilled, repairedor replaced. Likewater
vat inlets, thepipeconnectionswere sealedwithhemp.24Duringexcavationwork in the south-
east of themedieval town of Krems (Drinkweldergasse/Ringstrasse), a paved courtyardwith a
stonewellwasuncovered.Abasin cladwith loam tomake it impermeable towater couldhave
beenusedas apool to raise fishor keep it fresh.25
An instruction in the fishers’ order of 1579 to offer fish for sale in fish troughs at the
market and not on boats on the Danube leads us to the conclusion that vatsmust have also
beenavailable inKremsfor thesellingof fish.26Thepurchaseofa lockable irongratingsuggests
that thewellwasnot freely accessible at all times.27 Expenditures for thewells at theTäglicher
Markt (Daily Market) and the Korngrieß, the trading place of corn (now: Körnermarkt) were
madeinthesameyear.28Providingfreshwaterwascloselyconnectedto takingcareof function-
ing sewagesystems.TheaccountbooksofViennadocumentnumerousconstructionand repair
works on sewage drains, for instance under butchers’ vending tables, nearHafnerturm, at the
