wells. At least from the 17th century on, a ‘pipemaster’ (Röhrmeister) was paid to take care of
thewell and the pipes leading to it. The large basin also served as a reservoir for firefighting
water.59 A chronicle describes a stone lion in themiddle andwater that poured down from it
through small pipes. Itswater is portrayedas light and clear andwitha lot of little bubbles.60
Altogether, itmaybe said in conclusion thatwaterhasbeenan important feature in towns
frommedieval timesonup to thepresentage.The inhabitantswerenotatall ignorantas to the
quality ofwater; on the contrary,water has always beenmonitored and attended to in several
ways, andbecamemore andmore amatter of communal responsibility, as a service of general
interest.
