Sie sind technischer Geschäftsführer einer sehr jungen Firma. Sehen Sie sich selbst als Start-up? Fabian Schmitt: Wir haben kein Bälle-Bad und wir haben keine Free Pizza und wir sitzen auch nicht im Silicon Valley. Wir machen aber auch ein paar Sachen anders als ein DAX 30, klar. Viele sogar. So gesehen sind wir mehr noch ein Start-up. Aber man erfindet sich auch nicht mehr so häu- fig neu, wie das am Anfang war, was dann einen Start-up irgendwo ausmacht. Wann was genau vom Start-up zu einer normalen Firma führt, weiß ich nicht, das verstetigt sich ganz automatisch. Sie haben große Organisationsherausforderungen zu meistern, viel Zuwachs an Leuten, viel Dynamik. Wir sind am Anfang nur drei Leute gewe- sen. Da musste man jede Funktion im Unternehmen irgendwie wahrnehmen. Das war eine echte Heraus- forderung. Man fängt mal irgendwie an, macht vie- les, ändert wieder, passt an. Das ist nie perfekt. Dann entwickelst du weiter, neue Leute müssen integriert werden. Daneben musst du immer schauen, dass dieser Gründer-Spirit weiterlebt. Gerade am Anfang lebt so ein Unternehmen extrem von der Motivation der Menschen. Das ist schon sehr Start-up. Hier trägt niemand Business-Look. Krawatte tra- gen auch relativ wenige. Ob das jetzt ein Start-up ausmacht oder nicht? Kommt immer auf die Definition an. Wir sind unterwegs auf einem Weg. Aber es festigt sich auch. Man muss gewisse Sachen nicht täglich neu erfinden, wie das am Anfang gewesen ist. Sie sind über die Start-up-Phase drüber weg, wenn man ehrlich ist. Schon erwachsen? Ja. Aber da klingt so ein bisschen Negatives heraus. Als sei es besser, aus Kinderschuhen raus zu sein. Ist es im Prinzip ja auch. Wobei, man muss immer darauf achten, dass man das Positive aus dieser Phase mitnimmt und versucht, es am Leben zu halten. Den Schwung. Sicher, darum geht es. You are the Technical Manager of a very young company. Do you consider yourself a startup? Fabian Schmitt: We do not have a ball bath and we do not have free pizza and we are not located in Silicon Valley. And of course we do a few things differently than a DAX 30. Many things actually. From this perspective, we are still a start up. But we do not reinvent ourselves as often as we did in the beginning, which is what some- how defines a startup. When exactly a startup becomes a normal company, I do not know. It hap- pens completely automatically. You have to overcome great organizational chal- lenges, a significant increase in people, many dynamics. Initially there were only three of us. We somehow had to assume every role in the com- pany. That was a real challenge. You start some- where, do many things, make changes, adjust. It is never perfect. Then you advance yourself, new people have to be integrated. In addition, you have to always make sure that the founder spirit remains. At the very beginning, such a company is extremely dependent on people’s motivation. This is really starting up. No one here has a business look. Only few people wear a tie. Whether or not this is indicative of a start up, I don’t know. It always depends on the definition. We are on a journey. But it also creates a bond. You do not have to re-invent certain things every day, as it was in the beginning. You have passed the startup stage, if you are to be frank. Already grown up? Yes. But that sounds a bit negative. As if it were better to have come of age. And that is basi- cally what it is. You have to make sure that you take the positives with you from this phase and try to keep it alive. The momentum. Of course, that’s the idea.
