all radically approached the development process for a sustainable vehicle. As Jürgen Gerdes, Board Member of Deutsche Post AG, was reading an article on the subject, he heard a bell go off – metaphori- cally speaking. The DHL Executive Board in Bonn learned about a company in Aachen and what Prof. Kampker reported to the newspaper about the development of the StreetScooter. “The goal isn’t the creation of the fastest or the lightest electric car, but of one that is affordable and doesn’t need to be produced in six-figure volumes to be cost-ef- fective. A vehicle that is designed holistically and can be customized to meet the needs of its actual use.” This sounded very much like a vehicle Jür- gen Gerdes had been looking for some time. Now the “bell” that went off was in Aachen for Prof. Kampker – on his phone. “After DHL contacted us in Aachen, I was thrilled,” says Kampker. “We reali- zed at that time a great opportunity, not just for us, but for actually changing something in the world. For this, I am extremely grateful.” StreetScooter GmbH received an initial development contract for a vehicle, which had to be completely tailored to the requirements of bis dahin unbekannten Firma, die offensicht- lich etwas völlig Neues in Sachen Elektromobilität gedacht hatte, vor allem aber radikal an den Ent- wicklungsprozess eines zukunftsfähigen Fahrzeu- ges herangegangen war. Als Jürgen Gerdes, Mit- glied des Vorstands der Deutschen Post AG, einen der Artikel zum Thema las, klingelte es bei ihm – symbolisch gesprochen. Der DHL-Vorstand in Bonn erfuhr von einer Firma in Aachen und was Prof. Kampker der Zeitung zur Entwicklung des Street- Scooters berichtete: „Entstehen sollte nicht das schnellste oder das leichteste Elektroauto, son- dern eines, das bezahlbar ist und sich nicht erst bei sechsstelligen Stückzahlen zu bauen lohnt. Ein Fahrzeug, das ganzheitlich konzipiert ist und sich auf die Anforderungen der Praxis individualisieren lässt.“ Das kam einem Fahrzeug, wie Jürgen Ger- des es schon lange suchte, sehr nahe. Jetzt klin- gelte es in Aachen bei Prof. Kampker, und zwar das Telefon. „Nachdem sich DHL in Aachen gemel- det hatte, war ich begeistert“, so Kampker. „Wir erkannten damals eine große Chance, mal tatsäch- lich etwas auf der Welt zu verändern. Dafür bin ich extrem dankbar.“ Ein Elektrofahrzeug wie der StreetScooter eignet sich insbesondere für Fahrten mit ausgeprägtem Start-Stopp-Verkehr. Durch die fast vollständige Emissionsfreiheit von Schadstoffen und Lärm sind die Autos sehr umweltfreundlich und leise.
