Concluding thoughts
Building as amethod for reader research is both a pragmatically banal and an
intellectually iterativeprocess.Whenbuildingisundertakencollaborativelywith
otherresearchers,andwithreaders themselves, it sharesacommongroundwith
focus groups. I have begun tomap that commonground in this essay by fore-
grounding elements of social process such as the co-production and co-con-
struction of bothmeaning and objects. I have also tried, through stories and
criticalreflection,tohighlighthowthepracticesofcollectivereading,likethoseof
building, are socially situated. These practices are structured through an un-
derstandingoftheeverydayworldthatwecannotgraspthroughonlyonemethod
orone interpretativeparadigm.
Ifmy story has amottomaybe it is this: Readers are great company, but as
researchers I thinkwehave tobeprepared tomakenewmethods, toget lost, to
becomeuncomfortable, and to fail.Weneed to feel the flashofpanicwhen ‘it’s
notonmymap!’
